Alkaline sizing agent in AKD

AKD (alkyl ketene dimer) is a fiber reactive sizing agent for papermaking under medium alkaline conditions. It is an updated product of rosin series sizing agents. Its reaction mechanism is as follows: AKD emulsion particles (generally 0.2-2um) are fixed on the fiber surface by means of cationic starch, polyacrylamide and other units or dual retention systems. During drying and storage, AKD molecules and the radians on cellulose molecules undergo esterification reaction to complete the sizing process.

  • 1. Product Introduction

It is suitable for writing paper, double glue paper, electrostatic copy paper, coated paper and other high-grade cultural paper, as well as fruit bag paper, photographic base paper, packaging paper and cardboard and other paper species. Compared with acid sizing, alkaline sizing in AKD can improve the strength and toughness of paper, improve printing performance, and can give paper good optical properties and stable chemical properties, suitable for long-term preservation of paper, but also can save long fiber raw materials, reduce pulp consumption, reduce equipment corrosion.

    2. AKD emulsion main indicators:

Appearance: milky white or slightly yellow emulsion

    Solid content: 10±0.5%, 12±0.5%, 15±0.5%

    Relative density: 1.01±0.005

    Ionic type: Cationic type

    PH value: 3-4,

Dispersion: easy to disperse in cold water

Stability: room temperature storage for 3 months

    3. method of use:

1, Generally, AKD emulsion is diluted to a concentration of 3-4% (raw materials can also be used), and continuously added into the slurry mixing box, high-level box or slurry pipeline by metering pump. Individual paper species such as fruit bag paper can also be added to the pulp tank.

Reference dosage: general cultural paper 0.07-0.3 (pure)Fruit bag paper 5-7% (pure)

2, The use of AKD needs to be matched with cationic starch, polyacrylamide and other units or dual retention system, and the order of addition is generally: cation → AKD → polyacrylamide.

    Reference dosage: cation 1-1.5%

    Polyacrylamide 150-250ppm

    4. Precautions and Requirements

    1. The PH value of the net front box is controlled to 7.5-8.5. If it is lower than 7.5, alkali can be added to adjust.

    2. Total alkalinity 150-250ppm, wet zeta potential ± 5mv.

3, should be selected according to the specific circumstances of the paper mill, determine the type of compatibility additives and its optimal proportion and joining methods and locations.

    4. Make sure that there is at least one drying cylinder on the paper surface, and the temperature is not lower than 95 degrees.

    5. AKD is best to use fresh emulsion, and the storage period is best within one month.

6, from acidic papermaking to medium alkaline papermaking should be thoroughly cleaned equipment and pipelines.
